Orchids Not So Tough To Grow After All

A University of California Davis study Rocket Farms sponsored found orchids grow best and maintain healthy flowers longest when watered only every 20-25 days. Rocket Farms, a Top 100 Grower located in the Salinas Valley in California, plans to use the information from the study to reposition orchids as one of the easiest household plants consumers can maintain.

Rocket Farms grows orchids in moss rather than a bark or medium soil to decrease the amount of water needed by their orchids.

the amount of water required is based on humidity, air movement, temperature and the media used to grow your orchids. If I were to only warer my cpop every 20 to 25 days, I woldn’t have a crop to water after the summer. Rocket Farms is in the Salinas Valley, not the Sacramento Valley like I am.

The other thing to consider is the density of the sphagnum moss. Many commercial growers pack the pot so tight, it is hard to re-wet when dry, or stays too wet when wet. Orchid roots need to be able to breathe, or they will rot. I understand shelf life is important, but many buyers may not understand how and when to water. Using ice cubes is not appropriate.
