‘Lemon Zest’ Petunia New To VIVA!

The latest addition to the VIVA! collection of flowers is ‘Lemon Zest’ petunia, which stands out with its soft yellow flowers and bright yellow pot. It’s available exclusively at Home Depot.

“When you can make a strong block of color, consumers will stop, look, then buy,” says Gary Mangum, co-owner of Bell Nursery, which is a VIVA! supplier for Home Depot. “We saw significant sell-through numbers with this display.”

‘Lemon Zest’ petunia was bred by Dummen. It’s being marketed by Floragem.

“I like the plant infrastructure,” says Ray French, product manager for Floragem. “Petunias tend to split apart or get bald in the center of the plant. ‘Lemon Zest’ grows in a nice, tight, mounded manner so the color stays on top of the plant and you avoid green spots.”

This is the second year I have had these petunias. I live in central Florida and the summers get really hot. Last year my petunias started to get brown leaves near the bottom of the plant and eventually died. I think I didnt’water them enough. I had them in containers. This year I have again planted them in containers and they are blooming profusely, but starting to brown up in the bottom leaves again. I dead head them and use liquid Miracle grow. What is happening to them?

These flowers are exclusive to Home Depot. I live in South Carolina and I planted them last year and again a month ago. They are beautiful but after about 4 or 5 weeks, some of the stems will start to wilt while others are still flowering. One by one the stems wilted and I had to pull them up and fill in with other plants. I love the color in my planters but wish I could make them last longer. The other plants (including other petunias) flourish so I’m not sure why these don’t last long. I would be open to any suggestions as well.

Yellow petunias are genetically weaker plants. They also tend to be more sensitive to higher ph. High ph causes an iron deficency. Maybe feeding with Miracid (Miracle-Gro for acid loving plants)will help them grow better for you. It sounds like you are getting some sort of fungal disease so don’t overwater!!

I have these Lemon Zest in Zone 6 in Massachusetts. I water them regularly and they are a spectacular bloom! Very full bodies plant, great color and sturdy.
