Plant Select Recommendations Made For 2008

Plant Select, a program administered by Colorado State University, Denver Botanic Gardens and nursery and landscape professionals, has made its 2008 recommendations for growth in Colorado’s high plans and intermountain regions.
Among this year’s recommendations are ‘Mongolian Bells’ clematis, Seven-Son Flower, ‘Blue Velvet’ pansy, ‘Little Trudy’ catnip, Red Birds in a Tree and ‘Northern Lights’ pansy.
‘Mongolian Bells’ clematis is a compact perennial available in pink, white, lavender and blue. It produces attractive seed heads in late summer and fall and reaches heights of 10 to 14 inches. It’s hardy in Zones 3 to 9.
Seven-Son Flower is a lush large shrub or small tree that produces fragrant white flowers in late summer and cherry red sepals in fall. It grows to 12 to 20 feet tall and 8 to 15 feet wide, and is hardy in Zones 4 to 9.
‘Blue Velvet’ pansy is a navy blue annual that grows to 5 to 10 inches in height and 10 inches wide. It blooms from September to summer and is hardy in Zones 2 to 9.
‘Little Trudy’ catnip is a perennial with distinctive silvery foliage and a long season of lavender bloom. It’s hardy in Zones 4 to 9.
Red Birds in a Tree is a perennial with showy crimson tubular flowers that grows 36 inches tall and 18 inches wide, and it’s also hardy in Zones 4 to 9.
‘Northern Lights’ pansy is a large flowered pansy that is a blend of lemon and lilac with blue accents. It is being marketed in partnership with Sakata Seeds, and is hardy in Zones 2 to 9.
