Distylium ‘Vintage Jade’
Distylium ‘Vintage Jade,’ a hybrid between D. myricoides × D. racemosum, is a compact, evergreen, disease- and insect-resistant shrub for full sun to partial shade. ‘Vintage Jade’ is heat and drought tolerant, wet-soil tolerant, and is an excellent replacement for cherrylaurels, junipers, hollies and Indian hawthorn. Small, reddish maroon flowers add late winter interest. Distyliums are members of the witchhazel family and are essentially unknown in American gardens. Plant Introductions believes gardeners, landscapers and landscape architects have been waiting for a novel broadleaf evergreen to serve as an alternative to the time-honored foundation plantings, and Distylium ‘Vintage Jade’ is just that plant. ‘Vintage Jade’ has a compact, low-spreading growth habit reaching approximately 2 feet by 5 feet after 5 years. It is cold hardy in Zones 6b to 9.
