Geranium (Interspecific) Fusion Flame by Ecke/Oglevee
Fusion Flame was designed to give growers a fast-growing, early-to-flower geranium for use in baskets, combo planters and pots without requiring the use of PGRs and high energy costs from heating due to the speed of flowering.

Geranium (Ivy) ‘Atlantic Red’ by Dummen USA
With big flowers, early flowering and very good branching, Atlantic Red is the latest color in the series.

Geranium (Ivy) ‘Blizzard Red’ by Syngenta Flowers
‘Red’ is the sixth color in the Goldfisch Blizzard series. Vigorous plants have excellent branching, good heat tolerance and huge, self-cleaning single flowers.

Geranium (Ivy) ‘Colorcade Red Ice’ by Ball FloraPlant
‘Colorcade Red Ice’ is a big-impact flower with red and white flowers in a stable flower patterns. Bred to the ideal series specs, very dense and trailing with no single shoots.

Geranium (Ivy) Dancing Idols by Fides
‘Candy’ (pictured) and ‘Lavender’ enter the Dancing Idols series this year.

Geranium (Ivy) ‘Pacific White’ by Dummen USA
‘Pacific White’ has big flowers that bloom early with good branching.

Geranium (Ivy) ‘Temprano Dark Red’ and ‘Temprano Pink’ by Syngenta Flowers
Two new colors are available for the Goldfisch Temprano series, which is early to bloom and produces very floriferous plants.

Geranium (Regal) Candy Flowers Series by Ball
Impressive color, including a unique bicolor, and floriferous, medium habit make Candy Flowers a standout. It blooms early and throughout the summer and can be grown cool for energy savings. Colors are Bright Red, Dark Red, Pink With Eye, Violet and Bicolor.

Geranium (Royal) Elegance in three colors by Ecke/Oglevee
Ideal for Easter and Mother’s day, the Elegance series produces full flowers in March through early summer and is self branching with durable foliage for shipping. Tissue-like flowers are available in a full range of colors, including Crystal Rose (pictured), Red Velvet and Sunrise.

Geranium (Zonal) ‘Allure Scarlet Improved’ by Ball FloraPlant
‘Allure Scarlet Improved’ is more floriferous with a more vibrant scarlet-red color. Foliage has more distinct zoning that holds well in low light conditions. White is also a new introduction this year.

Geranium (Zonal) Apache by Hem Genetics
New in the Apache geranium collection this year are two colors: Red and Violet (pictured). The series now features 13 colors, which reach a height of 10 to 12 inches in the garden.

Geranium (Zonal) ‘Designer Salmon Improved’ by Ball FloraPlant
‘Designer Salmon Improved’ is a more intense salmon color and resists fading. It features well-zoned foliage on round, full plants.

Geranium (Zonal) ‘Euro Coral Glow’ by Ecke/Oglevee
The Euro Collection is best suited for high-density production, featuring compact plants with traditional green goliage. It is a prolific bloomer and is early to flower.

Geranium (Zonal) ‘Fantasia Purple Sizzle’ by Ball FloraPlant
Purple Sizzle is a geranium color breakthrough—unique purple with dark red eye on very floriferous plants. Reacts to PGRs more than others in the series.

Geranium (Zonal) ‘Fidelity Deep Lavender’ by Syngenta Flowers
‘Deep Lavender’ is the latest color in the Goldfisch Fidelity series. Fidelity has a naturally compact habit for higher density production and easier shipping. Plants are well branched with a smaller leaf size and early blooms, requiring little-to-no growth regulation. Flowers are resistant to shattering.

Geranium (Zonal) Master Idols by Fides
Fides introduces its Master Idols series this year. The series includes six colors: Red, Scarlet Red, Coral, Pink, Neon Purple and White.

Geranium (Zonal) Moonlight Pink by Selecta First Class
The first true pink, Moonlight Pink is a dark green-leafed series ideal for 4.5- to 6-inch programs. No pinching is necessary to produce well-branched plants with early, large flowers.

Geranium (Zonal) Savannah Ruby Sizzle and Merlot Sizzle by Dummen USA
The Savannah series features dark foliage, medium vigor and attractive flowers and colors.

Geranium (Zonal) ‘Summer Idols Purple’ by Fides
Purple joins the Summer Idols series, which already contains 10 other pelargoniums.

Geranium (Zonal) ‘Sunrise White’ by Selecta First Class
A clear white color is now available in the Sunrise series. This medium green-leafed series offers large flowers, medium vigor, free branching and excellent garden performance.

Geranium (Zonal) Sunrise XL Series by Selecta First Class
The new Sunrise XL series combines the medium-high vigor varieties from the original Sunrise series plus two all-new colors to create the largest-sized geranium series from Selecta. Colors include XL Appleblossom, XL Brilliant White, XL Dark Salmon, XL Firestorm, XL Orange, XL Raspberry Eye, XL Rose, XL Strawberry Blush and XL True Red.

Geranium (Zonal) ‘Showcase Extreme Rose’ by Ball FloraPlant
‘Showcase Extreme Rose’ is a unique color with an eye-catching freckle. Showcase is a great quick-turn crop for pot-tight, late-season summer production.

Geranium (Zonal) ‘Tango White’ by Syngenta Flowers
Large, brightly colored flowers contrast nicely with dark green foliage in this Goldfisch geranium series, now with 17 colors. Medium vigor plants with sturdy root systems are well-behaved in the greenhouse and perform well in the garden.

Let’s Talk About Starflowers. Why Is Pentas Not More Popular?

It is good to talk about production techniques, performance results and then to see how our friends garden. Diversity of plant material has always been a strength in American garden centers, and we should never run out of plants to get people excited. However, perhaps people are tired of Petunias or Callas or Geraniums, but we will never run out of options to put in front of them. One plant that is often overlooked is Pentas, a fabulous summer crop for late spring sales. These are heat-tolerant plants, and growing them below 65°F in the greenhouse results in significant delay. Fertility should be at least 150ppm nitrogen, but avoid ammonia in the fertilizer. Plants are best grown at a somewhat higher pH than usual, between 6.4 to 6.8. For best presentation, pinch out the center bud. Side flowers will bloom together, and plants will walk off the shelf. Garden centers […]

Spread Your Risk Beyond Spring Sales [Opinion]

Growers who participated in Greenhouse Grower’s 2015 Spring Crops Recap Survey said they have had enough of the uncertainty that the weather brings. They said it’s time to build up sales in other seasons like fall so we’re not so dependent on spring. As a couple of wholesale growers, both from the Southeast, very eloquently stated, our industry has mastered squeezing everything we can out of the spring season. And while this year happened to be a very successful one, thanks to the improving economy and elevated consumer confidence, they said, “now is no time to celebrate.” “Spring is still Christmas in the horticulture industry, but we have done such a good job focusing on spring that we have neglected other seasons,” one grower said. “Having so many eggs in the spring basket is dangerous. Fall will never be what spring is, but having a solid second season is in […]

Backyard Success: Mike McGroarty Educates Aspiring Growers

Mike’s Backyard Nursery sits on a long, narrow, 5-acre property located in Perry, Ohio. There, customers can find a variety of flowering shrubs available, all in 2-quart pots, and all for sale for $5.97 each. Owner Mike McGroarty, a lifelong resident of Perry, says the town has a lot of plant nurseries, including 100 wholesale growers within a 10-mile radius of his house. That doesn’t discourage McGroarty, because he knows that while there are a lot of nurseries in his area, no one else is doing what he is doing. McGroarty has learned about plants — and marketing them to his audience — through decades of experience. He has never hesitated to pass along his knowledge to other growers looking to start their own backyard operations, and has created an entire program to educate aspiring growers. McGroarty Likes To Practice What He Preaches McGroarty’s operation serves as the laboratory for […]
