Terra Nova Nurseries announced a new heuchera series called Little Cuties during the OFA Short Course.
The series features seven new heuchera varieties:
Heuchera ‘Ginger Snap’
Heuchera ‘Sugar Berry’
Heuchera ‘Sweet Tart’
The new Little Cuties series features compact varieties with a strong mounding habit and flowers that have a long bloom time of May through October. All the plants in the series perform well in full sun, part shade or full shade in USDA Zones 4 through 9. These miniature varieties were bred to showcase an assortment of colors ranging from the caramel foliage of Heuchera ‘Blondie’ and the rosy and tan-brown foliage of Heuchera ‘Ginger Snap’ to the dark burgundy veins of Heuchera ‘Frost’.
“Terra Nova Nurseries’ goal is to develop varieties with improved characteristics or new traits that address marketplace needs for stronger, more unique plants,” says Dave Doolittle, marketing director for Terra Nova Nurseries. “Little Cuties are being introduced as the smallest heuchera varieties to date, offering a complete series that works well as a whole for beds, borders, containers, and other applications.”
The very showy Heuchera ‘Sugar Berry’ has dark veins and is just 10 inches wide and 6 inches high with a 10-inch flower height. With up to 20 8-inch flower spikes during bloom time, Heuchera ‘Blondie’ sits at 8 inches wide and 5 inches high. Heuchera ‘Coco’ is a miniature of Heuchera ‘Obsidian’, and it features chocolate foliage and size dimensions of 10 inches wide, 6 inches high and a 10-inch flower height.
At 8 inches wide, 5 inches high with an 8-inch flower height, Heuchera ‘Sweet Tart’ has bi-colored cerise and pale pink flowers on dark stems in wand-like clusters. Heuchera ‘Ginger Snap’ has 10-inch high rose-pink flower spikes and is 8 inches wide and 5 inches high.
The 8” wide and 6” high Heuchera ‘Frost’ has multiple crowns that bloom 9 inches high in the spring, summer, and fall. Also in the series, Heuchera ‘Peppermint’ produces deep pink flowers and grows to an average size of 9 inches wide and 5 inches high, with a 9-inch flower height.
As a whole, the series attracts hummingbirds and butterflies, is drought tolerant, grows well in the Deep South, and boasts winter color. Due to their compact size, Little Cuties work well in medium and small containers, rock gardens, mixed beds, and they yield even and tidy front borders.
