Terra Nova Nurseries Releases Two New, Attractive Begonia Varieties

Terra Nova Nurseries has released two new Begonia varieties: Begonia ‘T Rex Stardust’ and Begonia ‘Spectre Silver.’ Stardust is the latest addition to Terra Nova Nurseries’ existing T Rex series, and Silver is the first introduction to the company’s new Spectre series.

Begonia ‘Spectre Silver’ has broad, maple-shaped leaves of glowing mint-green and silver-white that are accompanied by bright red-pink, long-lasting flowers, which hang on the plant casually. The vigorous, easy growing, well-branched begonia forms a 10-inch basket. This unusual and attractive perennial contains a 16-inch trailing habit, is hardy in Zones 8 to 11, and thrives in shade.

From plug to a 4-inch pot, the finish time is between four to six weeks. For a gallon-sized pot, the finish time is between eight to 10 weeks.

Begonia ‘Spectre Stardust’ is made up of fresh-green, burgundy, and violet foliage, which is stippled and spotted with cream-colored dots. The leaves are medium-to-large sized, very showy, and sometimes spiraled, and the color varies with the temperature. What makes this plant of interest in gardens and landscapes is its large, full, shrubby, and mounding habit; hardiness in Zones 9 to 11; ability to thrive in part or full shade; ability to be shipped cool; and its galaxy of colors. Stardust also serves well as an interior plant.

From plug to a 4-inch pot, the finish time is between three to four weeks. For a gallon-sized pot, the finish time is between six to seven weeks.

Terra Nova Nurseries has created a Plant Profile page and grower recipe specific to this new variety so growers can learn about growing habit, plant characteristics, fertilization recommendations, water requirements, and other insights provided by the breeding team. These documents can be viewed and downloaded for printing at TerraNovaNurseries.com. Growers can contact their Terra Nova Nurseries’ representatives or email the sales team at [email protected].

California Spring Trials Day Four: New Plant Intros fro…

The Greenhouse Grower team saw loads of memorable plants during day four, as it visited Dümmen Orange, Chisan Orchids, and Windmill Nursery. Dümmen had several notable introductions, including Wild Romance New Guinea impatiens in Blush Pink and White, which inspired the theme of its displays. One of the standout displays was its perennial combos with some new leucanthemum additions. Chisan Orchids in Los Alamos, CA, with Israeli breeders Hishtil, Jaldety, and Cohen Propagators, was a new stop on the route this year. Hishtil has a new gaura series out that includes a compact, low-growing variety, ‘Baby,’ with a mass of pink blooms. Cohen displayed Verbena ‘Mickey Red Rose,’ a unique bi-color that looks like a mixed combo, and Jaldety featured an interesting Cyperus prolifera. Windmill Nursery was the last stop of the day, with breeders Terra Nova Nurseries, Kientzler, J. Berry Nursery, and KiwiFlora. Terra Nova had several new heuchera for show, including ‘Onyx,’ which is a mounding, […]
