Open Houses Around The Corner

Breeders, growers and universities in Colorado and New Hampshire will host their annual open houses this week and next. Welby Gardens, Syngenta Flowers, Colorado State University, D.S. Cole Growers and Pleasant View Gardens are among those hosting their open houses in early August.

In Colorado, Welby Gardens will host its open house August 2. Trials open in Arvada at 4 p.m., and more than 800 new container planted annual and perennial flowers can be viewed. The Syngenta Flowers open house will take place a couple of days later, from August 4 to 5, in Boulder. Colorado State University will also host its Annual Flower Trial Garden Evaluation Day on August 5.

D.S. Cole Growers in Loudon, N.H., will have its open house August 7. Garden vignettes of its young plant products will be on display along with new variety additions, including an expanded selection of coleus, succulents, begonias and a new canna program with virus-free actively growing cannas. Pleasant View Gardens, also in Loudon, will host its open house August 7 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. . The open house will include tips and tricks of easy displays, an evaluation of 500-plus Proven Winners and Proven Selections varieties and a tour of the new Loudon production facility and display garden. 2015 Spring Crops Report: Rain Soaks Spring Sales

Rain, rain and more rain. That was the story this spring for the large majority of growers across the U.S. And where it wasn’t too wet, it was too dry. Drought conditions cut sales in the West and Southwest. But it wasn’t all bad. Eighty-nine percent of respondents to Greenhouse Grower’s 2015 Spring Crops Survey declared the season a success, despite its challenges. They said beautiful weather in April and excited consumers who were ready to spend got the season going early, but then cool temps and rainy weekends throughout May and June caused confusion over when and how much to plant. Of the 189 respondents to Greenhouse Grower’s 2015 Spring Recap Survey, 53 percent identified themselves as grower-retailers, 34 percent were wholesale growers and 13 percent said they were young plant growers. Participants From All Over The World Gather At Cultivate’15

Participants from the United States, Canada, Mexico and more than 20 other countries gathered in Columbus, Ohio for Cultivate’15 on July 11-14. The largest all-industry horticulture exposition and convention in North America recently concluded with approximately 10,000 attendees. The annual Season Premier at Costa Farms in Miami, Fla., is the industry's very first peek at new varieties for debut the following year, even before the California Spring Trials, heralded widely as the jumping off point for new varieties. This year's event revealed breeders' best and brightest new varieties for 2016, shown in field trials, landscape trials and containers at Costa Farms tropical trial gardens. Plant breeders presented their new varieties to buyers and members of Lowe’s grower panel. Growers, brokers and other allied industry members, including Home Depot growers and buyers, were also able to peruse the grounds to see how the new varieties fared in the winter trials. Later this season, the hot and humid conditions at Costa’s summer trials will help identify the true performers.
