Significant Changes Proposed For California Spring Trials

A steering committee was recently created at the urging of the National Garden Bureau to evaluate possible dates for the 2012 California Spring Trials. The committee felt it was important to set the dates as soon as possible rather than wait until the week of OFA Short Course to make a decision.

“We reviewed many different scenarios and tried to take into account the religious holydays of the Easter season and Passover, as well as the dates selected for the European Spring Trials,” says John Gaydos, product development and promotion for Proven Winners. “Also impacting the decision was the need for growers, retailers and buyers to be close to home as the typical spring season arrives.”

The date range chosen for the 2012 California Spring Trials are Friday, March 23 through Saturday, March 31. It was suggested that the industry encourage a “South to North” California Spring Trials visitor flow, and it was proposed that operations in the far South have open days from Friday, March 23 through Tuesday, March 27. Operations in the central part of state will have open days from March 25 through March 29, and operations in Northern California will be open March 27 through March 31.

“The committee felt this sequence of open days would lessen the financial burden borne by the exhibitors, and would make the entire trip more efficient,” Gaydos says. “Obviously, this is suggested and certainly will be a topic of discussion at our annual July meeting.”

The annual Spring Trials planning meeting will be held during OFA Short Course July 10 in Room D242 of the Columbus Convention Center.  The meeting will begin at 5:15 p.m.
