Bright Farms Launches Crowdfunding Campaign To Build Urban Farm In Washington, D.C.
Urban farming pioneer Bright Farms is attempting to crowdfund what it hopes will be the “world’s most productive urban farm,” in Washington, D.C. The campaign launched July 18 on Indiegogo, a popular crowdfunding website supporting all types of projects.
As of July 22, the operation had raised more than $8,000 of a $50,000 goal, with about three weeks left.
“As we prepare to break ground in Washington, D.C. on the world’s most productive urban farm, we’re turning to the Bright Farms community to request your help,” an eNewsletter from Bright Farms states. “A successful Indiegogo campaign will provide confidence to investors and help us secure the money we need to build the greenhouse.”
The publicly funded, 120,000-square-foot hydroponic greenhouse will provide year-round, local produce exclusively to grocer Giant Food. The operation entered into an agreement with the food retailer earlier this year.
Bright Farms’ eNewsletter says its greenhouse development team is currently submitting permit applications in Washington, D.C. The crowdfunding campaign runs until September 16, 2014, and will accept any amount of money, from $5.00 on up. Contributors receive perks, which you can view on the campaign page.
