10 New Plants to Watch For in 2020
A few varieties from California Spring Trials (CAST) 2019 stood out to the Greenhouse Grower team of Editor Janeen Wright, Contributing Editor Allan Armitage, and Custom Content Editor Robin Siktberg because they offered something a little different.

Petunia ‘Capella Baby Pink’ (Danziger)
Capella petunias from Danziger are bred for compactness, easy growing in quarts, and a small retail cart footprint, yet they continue to fill out and produce big blooms for customers. ‘Capella Baby Pink’ is one of the new additions for 2019.

Dahlia ‘Sincerity’ (Syngenta Flowers)
‘Sincerity’ from Syngenta Flowers is a new vegetative dahlia with big, bold, white and pink bicolor blooms. Compact, well-branched plants have a mounded habit and bloom continuously from spring to summer.

Viking and Viking XL Begonias (Sakata Ornamentals)
These all-weather seed begonias from Sakata Ornamentals are available in Green, Bronze, and Deep-chocolate colors. The Viking Series includes eight colors and the Viking XL Series has four. ‘Viking XL Red on Chocolate’ (pictured) is an All-America Selections Winner.

Digitalis ‘Pink Panther’ (American Takii)
‘Pink Panther’ from American Takii is an annualized, first-year flowering perennial with a compact habit and long-lasting blooms. Plants are sterile, and don’t self-seed, so blooms last longer. ‘Pink Panther’ is hardy to Zone 5, with cover.

Taka Tuka Bidens (Benary+)
Taka Tuka Bidens from Benary+ have a well-branched habits and bi-color patterns. Plants put on a continuous show of summer color. The series includes Red Glow, Red Yellow Center, Orange Yellow Center, and White Yellow Center.

New Guinea Impatiens ‘Roller Coaster Hot Pink’ (Dümmen Orange)
‘Roller Coaster Hot Pink’ from Dümmen Orange is the start of a new series. It is a shade item that has double blooms with ruffled edges. With its vigorous habit, ‘Roller Coaster Hot Pink’ is a good choice for late spring to early summer sales.

Lavandula ‘Madrid Lavish Pink’ (Green Fuse Botanicals)
The Madrid series from Green Fuse Botanicals is selected for earliness to flower and plant uniformity. Plants have large flowers and multiple bracts and thrive in hot, dry climates. The series includes Rose, Purple, and Blue colors, in addition to Pink, and a White is in the works.

Pentas Sunstar Series (Proven Winners)
A breakthrough in breeding from Proven Winners allows for production of Sunstar Pentas by Northern and Southern growers without the need for supplemental lighting. These pentas are heat and humidity tolerant and more accepting of cooler temperatures.

Heuchera ‘Northern Exposure Sienna’ (Terra Nova Nurseries)
Sienna from Terra Nova Nurseries has hardy H. Richardsonii breeding for better cold tolerance and longer-lived plants. Despite that, it shows good heat tolerance and is rust resistant. Plants are hardy in Zones 4 to 9.

Kanmara from Ball Ingenuity is a new generation of Hydrangea macrophylla with huge blooms and elegant foliage that holds up well in the rain. It’s an outdoor decorator hydrangea for shade to deep shade. The series includes five colors.
