University Of Arizona’s Greenhouse Crop Production & Engineering Design Short Course To Take Place In March

The annual Greenhouse Crop Production & Engineering Design Short Course, presented by the University of Arizona’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CEAC), will be held March 20-25, 2016, at the Westward Look Resort in Tucson, AZ. The event features three full days (March 21-23) of in-class lectures on a variety of topics, and a hands-on workshop on March 24 where attendees leave the classroom setting for a day of workshops and tours on the CEAC campus. There is an optional commercial greenhouse tour on March 25.

New to the 2016 course (which is sponsored by Meister Media Worldwide and Hort Americas) are specific half-day sessions on “Indoor Growing” and “Lighting for Growing Crops in Controlled Environments.” In addition to the new sessions, the short course will feature a comprehensive program that will help you successfully grow crops within controlled environments and ensure those crops thrive and are marketable.

The event’s speakers and experts have more than 250 years of combined experience in controlled environment agriculture and are available to answer questions both during and after the course. The on-site course also includes an exhibitor room, where attendees can talk with industry experts about their projects, and multiple industry presentations, where attendees can meet successful growers and discuss ideas. As one attendee from the 2015 course stated, “I’m taking pages of notes back to the farm to put in production. The combination of University of Arizona experts and real-world farming experience is exactly what we farmers need.”

Breakfast and lunch will be provided to attendees daily. Registration is now open online.

For those who cannot make it to Tucson for the course, a webcast attendance option allows you to watch lectures live on your computer from home, work, or anywhere with a secure Internet connection. Webcast attendees can view the PowerPoint presentations, see the speaker talk in real time, and even ask questions during Q&A Sessions. You can also order a DVD of the talks or add a DVD to your Webcast registration for a small fee. Lectures are recorded and put in an online database to be viewed by attendees for 90 days.

Email Aaron Tevik with any questions about the Short Course.

What’s Good For The Environment Is Good For Business [O…

Investing in technology to become more sustainable “always goes hand in hand,” says Abe VanWingerden, co-CEO of Metrolina Greenhouses. “If it is good for the environment, it normally is good for business over the long term.” That connection was abundantly clear in the responses we received to this year’s Top 100 Growers Survey. VanWingerden points to three investments Metrolina has made as good examples of how technology can reduce an operation’s carbon footprint and pay dividends financially. Its biomass system burns locally sourced waste wood — a renewable resource; its ozone water treatment system cleans irrigation water, reducing the need for fertilizers and pesticides, and improving plant quality and precision growing; and electrostatic sprayers reduce water and chemical use, and provide more targeted chemical applications. Other Top 100 Growers have found VanWingerden’s theory to be true, as well. Costa Farms’ investment in solar energy panels on three buildings at its […]

Greenhouse Grower’s Top 100 Growers Talk Technolo…

The Top 100 Growers are already by nature some of the most technologically advanced greenhouse operations, due to their sheer size and need for efficiency. Many of the largest growers also serve big box merchandisers and home improvement chains, where prices are dictated, so producing plants at the lowest possible cost is essential to growers not only staying in business, but also profiting and expanding their operations. This year’s survey focused on the automation and technology the Top 100 Growers are investing in, and how these advancements have improved their operations, as well as how they have affected growers’ labor issues. We also asked growers about how they’re solving labor issues, where they’re recruiting new hires, and how they’re keeping their people committed. Lean management programs and sustainability certifications have become higher priorities in the past several years, due to growers’ needs to run efficiently and focus attention on sustainable […]
