There’s a lot of variety news to share from around the industry that has come in over the last few months, much of it centered on spring 2016. Here are five variety updates from breeders across the country.
1. Azalea ‘Autumn Fire’ Premieres Spring 2016
Encore Azalea announced the latest addition to its line-up of azaleas. The red-blooming ‘Autumn Fire’ will be available spring 2016. This dwarf cultivar has semi-double blooms and glossy, dark-green foliage that deepens to a saturated purple bronze in winter. Compact growth means little pruning is required. 2. New Cherry Tomato ‘Rambling Rose’ Suitable For Hanging Baskets
Three university researchers have come up with a new cherry tomato with a unique pink fruit color that is suitable for hanging basket production in greenhouses. ‘Rambling Rose’ originated from self-pollinating a single hybrid ‘Tumbler’ cherry tomato plant at the University of New Hampshire in 2009. The new fruit was developed by Becky Sideman (University of New Hampshire), along with Elisabeth Hodgdon (University of Vermont) and Jennifer Noseworthy (Gordon College).
3. Unrooted Beedance Combo Kits Available For Spring 2016 From Florexpo and Oro Farms/Dümmen Orange
For the first time, Suntory has announced the availability of unrooted cutting combination kits from two supporting cuttings farms – Florexpo in Costa Rica and Oro Farms/Dümmen Orange in Guatemala —for Bidens Beedance. Some key Suntory licensees may also choose to root and sell as liners, but Suntory is rolling the combos out as an unrooted program. Additionally, unrooted cutting kits from Suntory’s Breeder’s Choice combos for Million Bells and Surfinia will also be available from the farms.
4. Bailey Nurseries Rebrands And Launches Website For Easy Elegance Rose Collection
Bailey Nurseries’ new, rebranded website for its Easy Elegance Rose Collection is up and running. The new website, easyeleganceroses.com, showcases updated images, rose descriptions and how-to guides for inspirational garden plans to help consumers utilize the plants in their gardens and landscapes. Bailey plans to ramp up full consumer advertising for the website in spring of 2016. A new pot and tag will be coming soon to make the launch cohesive and understandable to garden consumers.
5. Plant Haven International Announces New Bidens ‘Cupcake Strawberry’
Bidens ‘Cupcake Strawberry’ is an elegant bicolor flowering in cheery pink and pure-white tones. It is covered with flowers from summer through fall for a long season of interest. This versatile plant is vigorous, easy to care for and heat and drought tolerant once established. It has a compact, round habit and blooms attract bees and other beneficial pollinating insects.
