Looking for something new to liven up landscapes? Create a new market with the first bedding plant mandevilla, Garden Crimson. It’s the latest addition to Suntory’s Sun Parasols.
The Sun Parasol collection spans 15 varieties in the Original, Giant and Pretty groups. All the hybrids offer pest and disease resistance and vigor and produce a higher flower count than ever seen in mandevillas. The popular Crimson varieties are the first that stay true to color. Sun Parasols have become so popular in Europe they’re replacing ivy geraniums in balcony plantings. And northern markets for prefinished mandevillas continue to grow.
Garden Crimson made its market debut at the Tropical Plant Industry Exhibition in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., in January and will be sold in 4-inch branded pots. While the other Sun Parasols are best suited for larger containers, Garden Crimson was bred for 4-inch production and landscape use. Plants are compact but feature powerful branching and produce large flowers.
They are an ideal choice for trendsetting landscapers, garden centers to sell as premium 4-inch items and also make nice baskets. Increase the value even more by mixing Garden Crimson with ‘Sun Parasol Original White’ in baskets and containers.
Plant one Garden Crimson liner in a 4-inch pot and finish in 16 to 18 weeks. For 6-inch pots, a liner will finish in 18 to 22 weeks. For 12-inch containers and baskets, plant two liners to finish in 26 to 29 weeks.
Mandevillas are long-day plants whose ideal growing temperature is 65 to 75°F the first two to three weeks after potting. Keep plants on the dry side to encourage plants to grow out quickly. Temperature then can be dropped to 65 to 70°F. Lower temperatures can be used, but plants will take longer.
Keep pH between 5.0 and 5.5. Watering is critical, and a dry regime is better than a wet one to prevent diseases. If plants are too dry, there will be a problem with nutrient uptake. So it’s best to water lightly and often.
