Terra Nova Nurseries recently introduced its new Heuchera ‘Testarossa’, a variety with bright-red foliage that maintains its color through fall. The name “Testarossa,” which means “redhead” in Italian, reflects the plant’s bold and fiery appearance.

Heuchera ‘Testarossa’ is a stout, mounding plant with short petioles, creating height and fullness without appearing stemmy. Its large, leathery leaves create red accents in mass plantings, borders, and edges, especially in fall. The variety thrives in full sun to part shade and moderately well-drained soil; organic soil types are also ideal. The company’s new heuchera was trialed for multiple years in Terra Nova’s gardens and has showcased strong performance and hardiness.

Terra Nova’s breeding team recommends allowing ‘Testarossa’ to dry moderately between waterings during greenhouse growing. Finishing growers can expect the finish time from a liner to a 4-inch pot to be six to eight weeks. The finish time from a liner to a 1-gallon pot is 10 to 12 weeks. ‘Testarossa’ grows most actively in spring and reaches a height of 10 inches, a width of 17 inches, and a flower height of 22 inches. USDA Hardiness Zones for this new heuchera are Zones 4-9.

Terra Nova Nurseries has created a “Plant Profile” page and “Grower Recipe” specific to this new variety and others, so growers interested in orders can learn about growing habits, plant characteristics, fertilization recommendations, water requirements, and other insights provided by the breeding team.
