Grower Russ Pennington Dies At 71

Russ Pennington, who made a career for himself as a horticulturist, botanist and greenhouse owner, died May 9 after a long battle with congestive heart failure. He was 71.

Pennington owned Colorado Cuttings in Lafayette, Colo., and Cherokee Cuttings in Terra Ceia, Fla. As owner of Colorado Cuttings, he was featured on the August 1991 cover of Greenhouse Grower. According to the corresponding article featuring Colorado Cuttings, Pennington expanded facilities regularly and modified crop mixes in each of the operation’s first five years.

“We can’t be doing the same thing year in and year out,” Pennington said. “You can’t survive that way.”

A memorial picnic is being held at Waneka Lake Park in Lafayette on May 25 at 4 p.m. for those who would like to join the Pennington to celebrate his life.
