Farmers’ Almanac 2025-26 Winter Forecast

While we are still sweating through the last stretch of summer, publishers of the Farmers’ Almanac are promising cooler days are right around the corner. According to the newly released Farmers’ Almanac 2025-2026 winter forecast, folks around the U.S. can expect a season filled with “dramatic swings and widespread wintry weather.” What does this mean?

The 2025-2026 winter forecast theme from Farmers’ Almanac is “Chill, Snow, Repeat.” Let’s dig into some of the forecast highlights.

Bring On the Cold

Record heat has been the story across most of the country this spring and summer. According to the Farmers’ Almanac, this pattern could come to a halt sooner than you think.  “… cold and snow might make an appearance as early as September in some areas of the country.”

A little further down the road, several notable cold snaps are expected.

“The season’s coldest temperatures will be found from the Northern Plains to New England. Readers in the Northwest should also prepare for a cold winter, especially in Idaho and Washington. A significant cold snap in mid-January will keep most shivering. Winter’s wrath continues with another pronounced cold spell predicted for mid-February.”

Precipitation Predictions

Where will it rain and snow the most during the upcoming winter? Farmers’ Almanac publishers have some thoughts:

  • “Frequent snowstorms in New England should keep snow lovers happy. Areas up and down the Atlantic Coast will see significant rain, mixing with snow from time to time. The Mid-Atlantic region is forecast to see some decent snow, especially for areas in the mountains.”
  • “The Great Lakes, Ohio Valley, and North Central states are set for a classic winter wonderland, while the Pacific Northwest mountains are gearing up for some impressive snowfall totals.”
  • “The Southeast, South Central, and Southwest are in for a wetter-than-normal winter, with Texas and neighboring states facing multiple cold rain events and occasional freezing precipitation.”

For more than two centuries, the Farmers’ Almanac has provided seasonal outlooks. The long-standing publication’s proprietary forecasting model was developed using correlations between celestial events and various meteorological conditions. It has roots that date back to its beginning in 1818. The forecast theme from Farmers’ Almanac for last winter was “Wet Winter Whirlwind.”
