Natural Industries' NoFly Insecticide

Whether you’re a grower with a full-blown integrated pest management (IPM) program or you traditionally rely on chemical insecticides to combat pests in the greenhouse, Natural Industries’ new NoFly biological insecticide is designed for you.

NoFly is formulated with spores of Paecilomyces fumosoroseus strain FE9001, a new microbe in the greenhouse industry here in the United States. NoFly actually originated in Spain, where a Natural Industries partner company will soon be distributing the biological insecticide throughout Europe. Natural Industries is the exclusive distributor of NoFly in the United States and Canada. EPA registration is pending.

According to Matt Kowalski, Natural Industries president, NoFly is the second insecticide containing a paecilomyces made available here in the U.S. The strain contained in NoFly, however, is novel and a completely new isolate. Additionally, this is the first new product Natural Industries has introduced since Stasis.

“There are several strains of paecilomyces in Europe right now but there’s really no paecilomyces on the market right now,” Kowalski says. “Any new active ingredient is a good thing for growers. This is a great complement to any insecticide program.”

P. fumosoroseus is a naturally occurring fungus that’s geographically widespread and a common pathogen of insect pests. NoFly is a specific isolated strain that is intended for biological control of whitefly and applied on all life stages of the pest: eggs, including larvae, and adults. Additional hosts for P. fumosoroseus include western flower thrips, aphids, mealy bugs, beetles and caterpillars.

The infection cycle of P. fumosoroseus is a particularly rapid one. Symptoms caused by the fungus are apparent within 24 to 48 hours after the conidia contact the insect. Once P. fumosoroseus penetrates the host cuticle, fungal multiplication takes place through formation of hyphal bodies in the host hemocoel within 24 hours. The host’s internal organs are then mechanically disrupted, initiating tissue necrosis and loss of function.

P. fumosoroseus is not a plant pathogenic organism and does not produce significant detrimental effects on beneficial insects, including bees and bumblebees. The only residues derived from applications of NoFly are short-lived spores that should not present any environmental persistence concerns in soil, water or air. These characteristics make NoFly an especially ideal product for IPM programs that utilize beneficial insects.

“Growers are really getting excited about these beneficial insect programs,” Kowalski says. “They’re getting more and more popular. This product is a great formulation because it’s 100 percent water soluble. Growers can run NoFly through whichever type of spray equipment they have. It’s a pretty convenient formulation.”
