New Fungicide Products

PERpose Plus broad-spectrum algaecide/fungicide from A Growing Alternative is a hydrogen peroxide-based product. It is formulated and specifically engineered to include a proprietary blend of stabilizers and buffers to counteract phytotoxicity. Its primary mode of action is oxidation of the outer cell membrane of vegetative endorspore, yeast and mold spore cells, fungus and algae.

Mozart TR fungicide from BASF, with the active ingredient fludioxonil, controls a broad spectrum of greenhouse diseases, including alternaria, botrytis, downy mildew, powdery mildew and rust. One six-ounce can covers 4,500 square feet of greenhouse space. In growing conditions with high disease pressure, growers can increase the number of cans to cover every 1,500 square feet of the affected area.

ZeroTol broad-spectrum algaecide/fungicide from BioSafe Systems has a newly updated label in California. This expanded label includes new applications for treatment of hard surfaces and greenhouse tools and equipment to prevent the spread of algal and fungal growth. In addition, ZeroTol is now labeled to treat several new organisms, including black spot, downy and powdery mildew, leaf spot, pseudomonas and xanthomonas, among others.

RootShield WP biological fungicide from BioWorks is OMRI (Organic Materials Review Institute) approved and listed for use in organic production. This wettable powder formulation of RootShield allows application through drip systems and drip irrigation booms used for soil drenches. RootShield WP provides preventative control, for up to 12 weeks per application of major root diseases including pythium, fusarium, rhizoctonia, thielaviopsis and cylindrocladium by growing on roots, protecting them against damaging fungi.

Affirm WDG fungicide from Cleary Chemical is a replacement for Endorse WP. Affirm WDG represents a new 11.3 percent Polyoxin D formulation, which is 4.5 times more concentrated than Endorse. This new, easy-mixing WDG formula now provides the same effective disease management previously developed by Cleary for turf and ornamental uses, at a much lower, 2.4-pound-per-acre use rate.

Disarm O from OHP is a broad-spectrum foliar and drench systemic fungicide that offers control of many troublesome foliar diseases, as well as soil-borne diseases such as rhizoctonia and phytophthora. Among the foliar diseases controlled by Disarm O are anthracnose, powdery mildew, rusts and leaf spots.

Palladium from Syngenta Crop Protection is now registered for use on ornamental crops. Palladium offers both contact and systemic activity against Botrytis cinerea and other foliar and stem diseases. Palladium contains the active ingredient cyprodinil, which provides a new, systemic mode of action for control of ornamental diseases. It works within the plant’s tissues by inhibiting disease penetration and reproduction. The second active ingredient, fludioxonil, provides contact and long-lasting residual protection on the plant surface.

FMC Professional Solutions has a winter incentive for Segway fungicide, offering a rebate of $20 per unit for purchases of six bottles or more of Segway fungicide from February 1 through March 31, 2011. Segway provides effective control of Pythium, Phytophthora and downy mildew. Featuring cyazofamid, Segway is the only registered FRAC Group 21 fungicide, which helps with resistance management.

Help prevent soil-borne diseases while growing greener plants with Actino-Iron biological fungicide from Natural Industries. Actino-Iron contains powerful microbes in addition to slow-release iron and humid acid for stronger and larger plant growth. Cure iron deficiency and protect your plants with no burning and no chemicals. Perfect for petunias, poinsettias, calibrachoas, geraniums, mums and more. Available in 50-pound bags or in bulk from your favorite soil manufacturer.

Selecting Fertilizer Rates For Several Spring Bedding P…

Fertilizing bedding plants can be difficult due to the differing needs of the large variety of plants that we grow. Many operations do not grow enough of any one crop to cater the fertilizer specifically for each crop. Therefore, grouping crops with similar fertilizer requirements and having two to three fertilizer strengths available is a practical way to ensure plants are getting the fertilizer they need. With many new plant varieties on the market, we wanted to conduct a trial at Cornell University to determine best fertilizer rates for several common bedding plant crops. 22 Bedding Plants Studied To Establish Fertilizer Rates Plugs and rooted liners of 22 crops (Table 1) were transplanted into 4-inch (500 mL volume) round pots with a commercial peat/perlite based substrate. The plants were grown in a glass greenhouse at Cornell University during the spring season at a spacing of one plant per square foot. Heating set […]

UMASS Fertilizer Trials Recommend Nature’s Source Organ…

In a recent online fact-sheet at its Extension website, the UMass Amherst Center for Agriculture, Food and the Environment lists Nature’s Source Organic Plant Food 3-1-1 as “the best liquid organic fertilizer,” according to Dr. Douglas Cox, Stockbridge School of Agriculture. It is called-out by the Extension after a number of years of studying the use of organic fertilizers for growing commercial greenhouse crops. The trials evaluated traditional water soluble and granular slow-release chemical fertilizers. Dr. Cox recommends Nature’s Source Organic Plant Food 3-1-1 as a liquid fertilizer that is readily available, cost effective, OMRI-listed and with good label directions for greenhouses. He also mentions the ease-of-use in how it mixes well with water and can pass fertilizer injectors. “Nature’s Source is currently the best liquid organic fertilizer,” Cox wrote in his article “Organic Fertilizers – Thoughts on Using Liquid Organic Fertilizers for Greenhouse Plants,” “I have seen no foliar chlorosis yet with this fertilizer. Nature’s source is widely available and a great […]
