Thermal Efficiency

Sterling HVAC Products:

The Shield is a stainless steel, tubular, gas-fired unit heater, ideal for greenhouse applications. Shield unit heaters provide safe, efficient and economical natural gas or propane heating for commercial greenhouse growers, with a tubular heat exchanger constructed of heavy-duty, 20-gauge, stainless steel for maximum protection against moisture and rust. The durable, tubular heat exchanger ensures efficient and uniform heat transfer and longer service life. Direct spark ignition and power venting reduce standby losses and provide more than 80 percent thermal efficiency.

Environmentally Responsible

Horticultural Identification Products:

HIP recently introduced the Repel paper substrate for nursery tags. Repel contains 30 percent post-consumer waste, making it an environmentally responsible choice. The Repel product resists curling and fading when exposed to water and sunlight. Unlike the glossy, plastic tags commonly used in the industry, printing on Repel paper produces a soft, matte image. The natural look reinforces the environmental benefits of the tag, appealing to the consumer’s senses with a soft look and a soft feel.

Improved Comfort

Dramm Corporation:

Dramm’s new soft EPDM Rubber Grips offer improved comfort and insulate your hand from cold irrigation water. Dramm’s EPDM rubber grips are more durable than NPVC foam handles and remain soft, use after use. The grips are UV-stabilized, preventing solar degradation and stiffening of the material over time. The new grips will be standard on all Dramm Handi-Reach Handles.

Portable And Durable

McConkey Co.:

McConkey’s greenhouse division, Solaris, recently announced the Solaris PortaBench. The PortaBench is constructed from 14-gauge steel and strong one inch tubing. Each Solaris PortaBench is 4 feet wide and available in 2-, 4-, 6- or 8-foot lengths. Benches arrive ready to assemble and easily bolt together with fasteners. All parts are hot-dip galvanized for durability. DuraBench Ultra bench tops (size two by four) drop into the frame. The bench is lightweight and easily moved.

Added Flexibility

Gas-Fired Products, Inc.:

Space-Ray has added four new higher capacity units to its line of LTS Series infrared gas tube heaters that allow users to better custom-design a radiant heating system that more efficiently meets their needs. Available in both natural and propane gas, the LTS Series infrared straight tube heaters come in 19 different models and in more than 100 different configurations. Capacities ranging from 40,000 BTU/hour to 250,000 BTU/hour. Heaters can be used in a straight, L-shape, U-shape or Z-shape configuration. For added flexibility, 90-degree elbows and corner reflectors allow mounting near walls, doors or corners.

Vertical Farming Looks to Go Mainstream

The University of the District of Columbia is the nation’s only urban land-grant university, so it was a particularly appropriate setting for the Association of Vertical Farming (AVF) to host the AVF Summit 2017 on September 22. The summit was a mix of education, advocacy, and policy discussion about urban agriculture — vertical farming in particular — targeted at finding ways to broaden its adoption in cities around the country and around the world. You’ve probably heard quite a bit in recent months about vertical farming — systems for growing food in stacked layers in completely controlled environments, applying inputs such as light, water, and fertilizer in precise amounts. While there’s some use of these systems in greenhouse settings, in many cases, urban farmers are repurposing abandoned buildings or even shipping containers. Match the availability of these facilities in most large urban areas with big cities’ limited access to fresh, […]
