California Pack Trials 2009 New Varieties Guide

California Pack Trials 2009 New Varieties Guide

Miss a year and you’d miss a lot. People often ask me if it’s necessary to go to the California Pack Trials every year. If your job is to be at the forefront of all the new developments in annuals, perennials, marketing programs and global supply, then I would say yes. Fortunately for me, it is my job and we look forward to presenting you with comprehensive coverage each year and are always looking for new ways to do just that.

My traveling companions were our Contributing Editor Dr. Allan Armitage of the University of Georgia and our Group Publisher Bob West. We had a great time filming about 100 Flip videos we’re still sorting through and editing. Many are already posted on GGTV.

We visited nearly 30 flower breeders and propagators from all over the world between San Jose and San Diego, March 28-April 4. In addition to American companies, many of which are based in California, breeders and producers from as far as Japan, Israel, Germany, Denmark, England and Holland camp out for a couple of weeks and make a pretty substantial investment in this event. Many exhibit at plug and liner operations.

At the breeder level, this past year has been a big one for consolidation and vertical integration:

– Syngenta Flowers acquired Goldsmith Seeds and the mum and aster lines from Yoder Brothers, along with the Yoder brand.

– Selecta has aligned itself with Ball Horticultural Co. as the exclusive broker for unrooted cuttings in North America.

– Ball purchased Dutch breeder Kieft Seeds.

– Bodger sold key seed lines to Benary and its vegetative division Bodger Botanicals to Sales and Marketing Director Steve Jones, who has started a new company called Green Fuse Botanicals.

Read all about the latest developments, innovations and varieties inside this handy guide.

Nexus Greenhouses Is Optimistic For Expansion Into New Markets

Cheryl Longtin and Mike Porter, who own Nexus Corporation, say they were excited to attend the grand opening of Gotham Greens’ new structure atop the new Whole Foods grocery store in the Gowanus neighborhood in Brooklyn, N.Y., when it opened in December 2013. The project is just one example of some of the new and expanding markets that Nexus Corporation has expanded into over the past few years. Jeff Warschauer, vice president of sales for Nexus, says the company has enjoyed getting to know and working with the founders of Gotham Greens, Viraj Puri and Eric Haley, and Jennifer Nelkin Frymark, the chief agriculture officer, on their innovative approach to business. “They are very excited and work hard internally – just great people,” he says. “From our perspective, it’s great to see that excitement and vision. The employees there are happy and there’s no turnover; they’re only adding new people […]

At two separate locations, the Dümmen Group presented its new take on several lines of plant genetics from the many companies under its brand umbrella. For the second year at Edna Valley Vineyards in San Luis Obispo, the Dummen Group presented new varieties of Red Fox plants, along with the HGTV HOME Plant Collection. Meanwhile, Dummen Group held its second trial location about 30 minutes up the road, at BarrelHouse Brewery in Paso Robles. Both locations were beautiful settings, but the vineyard provided especially lovely panoramic views through the tasting room window.

The annual Season Premier at Costa Farms in Miami, Fla., is the industry's very first peek at new varieties for debut the following year, even before the California Spring Trials, heralded widely as the jumping off point for new varieties. This year's event revealed breeders' best and brightest new varieties for 2016, shown in field trials, landscape trials and containers at Costa Farms tropical trial gardens. Plant breeders presented their new varieties to buyers and members of Lowe’s grower panel. Growers, brokers and other allied industry members, including Home Depot growers and buyers, were also able to peruse the grounds to see how the new varieties fared in the winter trials.
