29 New Flowering and Foliage Plants from TPIE 2017
The Tropical Plant Industry Exhibition (TPIE) in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, was the place to be Jan. 18-20 to see several of the latest introductions in flowering and foliage plants and discover which landscaping and interiorscaping trends are driving customer decisions. Seen in the Cool Products showcase and booths on the tradeshow floor, these 29 varieties are a small sampling of the new tropical and foliage plants seen at the show that will soon decorate homeownersâ living and outdoor spaces.

Aglaonema âGeorgiâs Rubyâ (Costa Farms)
âGeorgiâs Rubyâ is distinct with rich-green foliage veined in red and dotted in chartreuse. Itâs one of the easiest indoor plants to grow, offering everyone from hardcore collectors to indoor-plant beginners a positive experience.

Aglaonema âJazzed Gems Ruby Rayâ (ForemostCo, Inc.)
Ruby Ray is a variety out of Thailand that has vibrant, colorful foliage atop sturdy, colorful stems.

Aloe âWhite Sprintâ (Deroose Plants, Inc.)
âWhite Sprintâ is a hearty succulent with multiple textured leaves of white and flecks of green. It is low maintenance and makes a wonderful container plant or addition to a rock garden.

Phalaenopsis âMemphisâ (Anthura BV)
The sweet pink color of âMemphisâsâ flowers typifies the city it is named after. This variety is available for 5- and 6-inch pots.

Phalaenopsis âStellenboschâ (Anthura BV)
âStellenboschâ contains spikes full of flowers that remind one of beautiful vines. It is a tasteful South African Burgundian â a powerful orchid with deep-purple flowers that are soft as velvet. This purple beauty is suitable for 5-inch pots and has a height of up to 27Âœ inches.

Anthurium âArenât You Orange!â (Oglesby Plants International, Inc.)
The glossy, orange flowers and glossy-green foliage on âArenât You Orange!â are a striking combination for this new hybrid. It is a relatively fast growing and easy to care for anthurium, which exhibits early flowering and excellent disease resistance. Flowers are long lasting and age gracefully, changing to lighter shades of orange.

Anthurium âCiranoâ (Anthura BV)
With its shining foliage and numerous purple flowers, âCiranoâ is an elegant Frenchy with a classic character. It is both stylish and strong, retains its beauty for a long time, and can withstand cool temperatures. Plants are suitable for 5- and 5Âœ- inch pots.

Begonia âHarmonyâs Ray Gloâ (Ag-3)
Grown for it's foliage, this bright yellow-green begonia has dark venation and hosts black spots. It works well planted in the landscape or containers. Ray Glo is hardy in Zone 10.

Begonia âHarmonyâs Fire Womanâ (Ag-3)
The striking pink banding over white with a dark center and veins is evident year round in âHarmonyâs Fire Woman.â This beauty performs well and maintains its color even in the summer heat.

Boston Dakota Fern (Casa Flora, Inc.)
This relative of the Boston Fern sheds very little and maintains its compact form for easy shipping.

Colocasia âBlack Sapphire Geckoâ (Ag-3)
âBlack Sapphire Geckoâ has dark stems that support nice, tight clumps of foliage, and show off the maroon-covered undersides of the leaves. It grows to 6 feet, making it an excellent selection for the back of the garden.

Cordyline fruticose âSingapore Twistâ (Excelsa Gardens, Inc.)
âSingapore Twistâ won a TPIE cool product award for 2017. It is a unique variety that develops woody-like stalks with large, colorful, fan-shaped foliage. Smaller sizes will be available for retail.

Curcuma âSparklingâ (ForemostCo. Inc.)
This is a great shade-loving plant with beautiful late-summer blooms. Foremost plans to produce âSparklingâ in two liner sizes, including the 32-cell size. It has plans to eventually extend production of âSparklingâ to the North for June sales.

Dieffenbachia âWhite Blizzardâ (Costa Farms)
âWhite Blizzardâ offers more variegated foliage and thicker leaves than other varieties on the market. Leaves resist breakage in shipping and retail, and are also more pest resistant.

Euphorbia âQuismaâs Starâ (Deroose Plants, Inc.)
âQuismaâs Star is a compact, mini poinsettia that holds up better than regular poinsettias, even during shipping. Plants have bright-red inflorescences with dark green, crunchy leaves. They are perfect for an office desk, and even more so for restaurant tables. Deroose supplies them in a self-watering pot for durability.

Farfugium japonicum âShishi Botanâ (Ag-3)
This farfugium has a 3-D look, with crinkled leaves that are gray-green and fuzzy. Bright yellow, daisy-like flowers stand above clumps of 12-inch high foliage. Use âShishi Botanâ for containers and landscape borders, as well as for mass plantings. It is hardy in Zones 7 to 10.

From deep purple to candy-apple red with white tips and yellow top centers, âFrancescaâ beautiful, long-lasting, hearty hearty addition to any dĂ©cor. Its foliage is matte green, which is typical for a G. âFortunaâ hybrid.

This beautiful, fast growing, bright salmon-red guzmania is suitable for 4- to 6-inch pots.

With beautiful, star-shaped, orange foliage, âStellaâ is a small guzmania that will stand out in any room. It has compact green leaves and takes up very little space, and it is suitable for smaller pot sizes.

Hollywood Hibiscus shine with vibrant color and long-lasting, multi-day blooms. They have an outstanding bud count, making them natural performers for production, at retail, and in the landscape.

This native fern from Florida has fronds that stop growing after they reach a certain length, which means uniform fronds form around the pot for a nice ball of foliage. It also makes maintenance much easier.

âSamanthaâ is a stunning tillandsia with some T. vriesea in its genes. It is notable for its lime-green, curled leaves, which show the dormant tillandsia in this hybrid. The inflorescence is unusual in that the stem is pink with beaded bracts of lime green and pink. Deroose Plants won a âMost Unusual Plant Specimenâ award at TPIE 2017 for âSamantha.â
