Introducing BSFL Frass, an Organic Fertilizer and Soil Amendment
Oberland Agriscience, Inc. has introduced Oberland BSFL frass, an organic and sustainable fertilizer and soil amendment derived from black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) farming.
Oberland BSFL frass is a nutrient-rich co-product of black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) farming, containing organic matter and naturally occurring chitin – a compound found in insect exoskeletons. Chitin has been shown to promote beneficial microbes and support plant immune responses, contributing to increased plant resilience.
Certified for organic use in both the U.S. (OMRI Listed) and Canada (Ecocert), Oberland’s BSFL frass offers a balanced 3-3-2 NPK and provides slow-release nutrients for consistent plant health. Oberland BSFL frass enhances root development, nutrient uptake, and soil structure, while supporting beneficial microbial activity and water-retention capacity. These attributes make it a sustainable input for greenhouse growers, substrate blenders, and distributors focused on healthier soils. Oberland BSFL frass is suitable for both organic and conventional systems.
“Restoring soil health and enhancing climate resilience are key to securing the future of agriculture,” says Dr. Greg Wanger, founder and CEO of Oberland Agriscience Inc. “Incorporating Oberland’s 100% BSFL frass can help reduce reliance on conventional chemical fertilizers. Over time, this approach may contribute to healthier soils, more resilient crops, and ultimately healthier harvest yields for our communities.”
Independent greenhouse trials have shown promising outcomes in crop development and soil performance when using Oberland BSFL frass.
