Canadian Peat Moss Association Updates Industry Fact Sheets

The Canadian Sphagnum Peat Moss Association (CSPMA) regularly keeps the horticulture industry, as well as other interested parties, informed about trends surrounding peatlands in Canada. This includes science-based fact sheets. Over the past year, CSPMA has made a few updates to these fact sheets (each document can be found here).

The most current updates include:

  • A glossary of terms have been added to each fact sheet
  • Example of restoration efforts, such as restoration in action at Bois-des-Bel, Québec Peatland, have been added to Part 1
  • The Greenhouse Gas Emissions fact sheet (Part 2) has been reworked to present an easier to understand narrative about the importance of understanding/measuring GHGs from peat extraction and how this impacts Canada’s emissions, removing some of the overly technical information about the carbon accounting tier methodology from the 2023 version.
  • Veriflora® certification are updated to reflect Version 2.0 (released April 2025), replacing Version 1.0 (2017). Changes include: Updated GHG inventory requirements, revised definitions etc.
  • Part 4 has been renamed and reframed: “Alternative Materials and the Wise Use of Peat” (2023) is now “The Wise Use of Canadian Peat & Other Growing Media Components” (2026). The framing shifted from a peat-vs-alternatives comparison toward a systems view of peat as an “enabler” within growing media blends.
  • A new Appendix A was added to Part 4, formally defining “CSPMA’s Wise Use of Canadian Peat Principle” as a named, citable industry principle.
