2018 Southeast Floriculture Field Trials Results: Costa Farms

Costa Farms in Miami, FL, evaluates plants in its 2-acre field trial garden trials over a six-week period from Weeks 51 to Week 39. This year plants were transplanted on week 50, and all plants were placed under full sun. No pesticides or fungicides were applied. Plants are irrigated by a drip-tape system. The soil mix for the core beds is composed of coconut coir and bark.

Temperatures during the six-week period ranged from a high of nearly 84°F to a low of about 75°F. Rainfall was its highest around the first week of September with around 5 1/2 inches.

Costa Farms is No. 3 on Greenhouse Grower‘s Top 100 Growers list with 15,064,790 environmentally controlled square feet. Although Costa purchased Green Leaf Nursery in February, the operation reported 3.7 million fewer square feet in production space than in 2017 Shade house acreage is 1,250 square feet and field production acreage is 1,040 square feet.

This year Costa Farms named seasoned ornamental industry veteran Henry Gonzalez as its new Chief Marketing Officer. Gonzalez will oversee Costa Farms’ marketing, research, and category management teams.
