Dümmen Orange Enhances Predictive Breeding Tools, Names New Marketing Director

Dümmen Orange, in collaboration with IT Services company Fullstaq, has taken the next step in developing its predictive breeding capabilities. The implementation of a new Kubernetes-at-the-Edge software system offers even more possibilities for collecting and processing data that enable faster development of impactful creations with less waste. Running Kubernetes on location in greenhouses – as close to the data as possible – is new, and with this, Dümmen Orange is leading the way in the use of precision breeding tools and prediction software.

“Floriculture plant breeding is transitioning from conventional to predictive breeding,” says Loes Raijmakers, Business Analyst R&D at Dümmen Orange. “More than ever, software systems are important to collect and process the data that plant breeders need to make the right choices. Kubernetes is a system for automating software deployment, scaling, and management. It’s a platform that helps us getting an overview of different complex processes. That overview is essential for us to make the right choices faster and more efficiently, and to be able to select the best plant material for creating new crosses.”

Technology-driven breeding allows the floriculture industry to become more sustainable by using state-of-the-art breeding tools to develop novel resistance traits and to improve variety portfolios for the most complex traits.

Fullstaq, which specializes in Cloud Native solutions, helped Dümmen Orange with the implementation of Kubernetes and also provided training for the users.

“We could talk for hours about the technology we used in this project, but even more important is to emphasize the great collaboration between Fullstaq and Dümmen Orange,” says Gerrit Tamboer, CEO of Fullstaq. “Both companies are on the top of their game and constantly looking for ways to innovate. It has led to a close and positive collaboration, with excellent results.”

New North American Marketing Leadership

Dümmen Orange also recently named Marta Maria Garcia as its new head of marketing and retail for Dümmen Orange North America. She will oversee both departments effective April 1, 2022.

An experienced corporate retail marketing executive, Garcia joined the company last year as retail director. She brings valuable insight to the position gained from Dümmen Orange and her previous management experience at Nature’s Way Farms, Designer Cut Flowers, Costa Farms, and Bacardi. Her track record of creating and launching retail programs has been recognized throughout the horticulture industry.

Garcia’s expanded role comes as Chris Berg, Dümmen Orange North America Director of Marketing, resumes his full-time role as president of BlueSkye Creative, a marketing partner to Dümmen Orange. In this role, Berg will continue to provide creative services for Dümmen Orange, McHutchison, and Vaughan’s Horticulture. This partnership will include product catalogs, videos, and tradeshow support in an ongoing capacity.

“I want to thank Chris for his contributions to Dümmen Orange,” says Keith Cable, president of Dümmen Orange North America. “And I would also like to congratulate Marta Maria on her newly expanded role and all of the good things that will come from it.”
