Get Your Fill of Poinsettias at One of These Trials

‘Tis the season for poinsettias, and there are a number of greenhouses hosting poinsettias and open houses over the next few weeks.

The Millstadt Young Plants and N.G. Heimos Greenhouses Poinsettia Trial and Open House takes place on Nov. 21 and feature a comparison trial of hundreds of poinsettia varieties from seven different breeders: Beekenkamp, Selecta, Dummen Orange, Lazzeri, Rinehart, Syngenta, and Suntory. Plants will be finished under natural light conditions and a short day or black cloth conditions. Featured speakers for the event are Nancy Rechcigl (Syngenta) and Carlos Bogran (OHP). The Mitchell’s Nursery & Greenhouse Poinsettia Open House takes place on Dec. 1 in King, NC. This open house features 93 varieties of more than 10,000 plants. Finally, Plantpeddler’s Poinsettia Variety Day will be held on Dec. 5 in Cresco, IA. The event includes a side–by–side comparison of more than 150 commercial and pre-release poinsettia varieties, produced under true production protocols and environmental conditions. All major Poinsettia breeders will be represented in the trial, including; Beekenkamp, Dummen Orange, Lazzeri, Rinehart Poinsettias, Selecta One, Suntory, and Syngenta Flowers. Industry representatives will be present to support their genetics and growers. New this year is a “Lunch & Learn” meal and tech talk by Gary Vollmer, sponsored by Selecta One.
