Majority of Consumers Prefer Local Cut Flowers, Survey Finds

A recent survey conducted by the National Gardening Association and sponsored in part by the Slow Flowers Society found most consumers prefer locally grown cut flowers.

The most recent version of the survey added two new questions and focused on all consumers rather than just gardeners. The survey was also sent to more than 2,500 households in the U.S.

The two new questions asked were:

  1. When purchasing cut flowers, how important is it that the flowers are American grown?
  2. When purchasing cut flowers, how important is it that the flowers are locally grown?

“However, that question in the past was only asked of those who identified themselves as garden-participating households,” says Paul Cohen, Research Director at the National Gardening Association. “[Growers] shared [their] desire to gather more of a national opinion of everyone because [people] certainly do not have to be gardeners to buy cut flowers. In fact, many non-gardeners do buy flowers. We incorporated a new series of questions and asked all respondents as a national representative sample.”

This survey found that 57% of respondents said it is important that the flowers they purchase are grown in the U.S. In addition, 58% of respondents said it was very or somewhat important that the flowers they buy are locally grown.
