The Exciting Future of Floriculture, in Your Own Words

As you’ve already seen, this issue is packed with insights from Greenhouse Grower’s Top 100 Growers on the challenges they face, as well as the innovative steps some of them are taking when it comes to technology implementation, trend forecasting, and improving profitability. So, what better way to close this issue than with a look to the future?

One of the questions we asked in this year’s Top 100 Survey was “What are you most excited about when it comes to the future of floriculture?” I’ve compiled some of my favorite responses below. As you read them, keep in mind the old adage “A rising tide lifts all boats.” In other words, no matter the size of your operation, your success (and your customers’ success when they take your plants home) can help drive the future of this industry.

  • “The improving genetics. I think we are on the cusp of even greater improvements in pest and disease resistance, and size control.”
  • Young gardeners getting into the industry and discovering a love for plants.”
  • “Developing products to entice both the next generation of consumers and increase participation with the current generations.”
  • “I have three children who are following us in the business. I also have a great young team of growers and supervisors to help the next generation.”
  • “Igniting the passion in the younger generations to want to be engaged in the industry.”
  • New automation and new chemistries for crop health being introduced every day.”
  • “Knowing that we retained some of the COVID customers, who are on the younger side, shows that there is a growth upside in the industry.”

I believe that floriculture helps people to be happier and healthier. I’m excited that we are part of the solution.
