As we wind down 2023, many greenhouse operations face common challenges and concerns related to the long-term future of their business, and the floriculture industry.

In this year’s State of the Industry survey, one of the questions asked by Greenhouse Grower was “What are the top three concerns you have regarding your business?” Here are the most common responses:

  • The economy: 61%
  • Labor costs: 46%
  • Weather/changing weather patterns: 34%
  • Production costs (energy, equipment, etc.): 31%
  • Availability of skilled labor: 23%

How does this compare to the previous year? When we asked the same question in 2022, the most common responses were:

  • The economy: 59%
  • Production costs: 57%
  • Labor costs: 36%
  • Availability of skilled labor: 28%
  • Weather/changing weather patterns: 26%

Perhaps the easing of supply chain delays and concerns led to less concern about production costs. On the flip side, labor costs were a bit more of an issues in 2023.
