Tom Dodd Nurseries, Inc., in Alabama, has announced the acquisition of Van Der Giessen Nursery, uniting two names in the Southern nursery industry.
For Tom Dodd owner John Williams Jr., this merger is more than a business decision — it’s the continuation of a story that began generations ago in the heart of Semmes, AL.
“Our goal has always been to grow happiness — through plants, people, and partnerships,” says Williams. “Van Der Giessen has long been a respected grower with a passion for unique ornamental shrubs, both old and new, which makes this an incredibly natural fit.”
Both nurseries have long been known for their commitment to plant quality, customer relationships, and sustainable growing practices. The partnership is set to strengthen production capacity, expand customer offerings, and carry forward a legacy that has defined both brands for decades.
A Century of Cultivation and Care
Founded in 1920 by the Dodd family, Tom Dodd Nurseries has weathered a century of growth, change, and innovation while remaining rooted in family values.
When John Williams Jr. purchased the nursery in 2005, he brought new energy and vision to the business. In 2014, Williams became the sole owner and began expanding the operation through the acquisition of neighboring properties, including:

John’s children, Whitney and Walt Williams, have since joined the business, ensuring the family’s dedication to horticultural excellence continues for generations to come.
