Know Your Lighting Requirement During Cannabis Production Stages

Lighting is both essential and one of the largest cost components in controlled environment cannabis production. Cannabis production can be divided into propagation, vegetative growth, and flowering stages. Different stages of cannabis cultivation require different light quality, intensity, and photoperiod.

During a webinar on Wednesday, April 20, Dr. Youbin Zheng of the University of Guelph in Canada will discuss optimum light spectrum, technology, intensity, and more in the context of controlled environment cannabis cultivation from propagation to flower harvesting. All information will be based on the results of extensive research from the past few years. Some information, such as how to construct a light response curve to decide which light intensity to use, can also be useful in producing other crops in controlled environments.

Dr. Zheng is a professor at the University of Guelph (Canada) and the president of the Canadian Society for Horticultural Science. He has extensive research experience in controlled environment plant production and has published about 150 peer-reviewed scientific papers. His recent research focus includes indoor cannabis and other medicinal and nutraceutical plant production, greenhouse ornamental and vegetable production, and nursery and landscape plant production and maintenance. Dr. Zheng has been actively involved in collaborative indoor cannabis cultivation research with commercial cannabis producers for the past decade, and his group has published many peer-reviewed scientific papers on indoor cannabis production. He developed the world’s first university-level Cannabis Production course in 2019. Dr. Zheng has been frequently invited to speak about his research results nationally and internationally.
