Growers Planning to Invest in Structures in 2017

Growers Planning to Invest in Structures in 2017If this year’s Greenhouse Grower State of the Industry survey is any indication, growers are planning to make major investments in structures and facility upgrades this year.

One of the questions related to new technology in this year’s survey was “Which of the following areas do you plan to invest in most in 2017?” Of the more than 200 growers who responded to the question, almost 50% ranked greenhouse structures and coverings as their most likely area to invest. This category was followed by irrigation equipment (30%) and computer services and technology (26%).

Of those growers who said they would be investing in structures and coverings, almost half were growing in less than 100,000 square feet of production, and another 24% had between 100,000 and 499,999 square feet of production. Labor and production costs were among their business concerns, which is why many of them said they were looking to improve efficiencies through investments in technology. Some were also looking to expand the overall size of their operations.
