An Expert Take on Present and Future Developments in Growing Media

Growing media seems to change constantly as growers seek a medium to grow plants successfully at the least costs. There have been major changes in growing media in the last 10 to 15 years alone.

In an American Floral Endowment (AFE) webinar held earlier this year, North Carolina State University’s Brian Jackson offered his thoughts on:

  • What is important in a good growing media?
  • Are there new components that growers should consider and are the components sustainable?
  • What should growers be asking their supplier when selecting a high-quality growing media?

The full webinar is available for on-demand viewing here. The presentation is part of a monthly Grow Pro webinar series AFE launched in May 2021 on production areas and topics that directly impact growers. AFE’s nationally recognized researchers, hosts, and speakers offer how-to advice based on AFE-funded and other research projects to help the industry navigate through these ever-changing growing challenges. The webinar topics are current and offer long-term opportunities for growers to focus on increased profit, greater sustainability, and improved labor efficiency.

This is the worst “innovation” that I have experienced in the past 12 years.I buy plants from nurseries & growers and resell plants to my clients. Plants grown in “growing media’, which is primarily wood, produces plants that die if transplanted without removing the “media”. We have to remove the “media” from the roots to install the plant in our clients’ landscapes and risk damaging the roots. If they are planted into pots, we have to buy real soil. Soil is mineral based.

To make problems worse for the un-knowing public, bags of “soil amendment” is being labeled as soil. These products have an almost zero percent of minerals. It’s false advertising to label it as soil.
