2025 Greenhouse Training Online Continues with ‘Substrates for Container-Grown Plants’
‘Substrates for Container-Grown Plants’ starts on Oct. 6, 2025, and is the next course in the Greenhouse Training Online series from the University of Florida IFAS Extension (UF/IFAS). This intermediate-level course is designed for those with some training or entry-level university experience in production, technical, or sales roles in the greenhouse or nursery industry. It is also a requirement for the new Root Zone Expert program.
‘Substrates for Container-Grown Plants’ Course Topics
Course participants will learn about:
- Factors that influence how water is held in substrates (soil physics)
- How to measure the amount of water and air in a container
- Materials used to make substrates
- Substrate testing and how to interpret results
- Substrates that work best for specific crop situations (hydroponics, ornamentals, transplants, etc.)
- Why plants are grown in substrates
‘Substrates for Container-Grown Plants’ Schedule and Registration
The ‘Substrates for Container-Grown Plants’ course runs from Oct. 6–31, 2025. Available in English and Spanish, all course material is completely online and available at any time of the day. It includes pre-recorded videos, quizzes, and an interactive discussion board with Dr. Loren Oki, Professor Emeritus at the University of California, and Dr. Jeb Fields, Assistant Professor at the University of Florida. Two new modules are activated each week during the course, for a total of eight learning modules. Instruction is at each participant’s own pace and time within the four weeks of the course, with a typical time commitment of about five hours per week.
