Heuchera Proves Pivotal During Terra Nova Netflix Debut

Several heuchera varieties bred by Terra Nova Nurseries recently made their Netflix debut on the streaming service’s original series, “The Big Flower Fight.” Contestants of the new Netflix-produced show used Heuchera ‘Fire Alarm’, Heuchera ‘Marmalade’, Heuchera ‘Obsidian’, and Heuchera ‘Paprika’ for various creative garden displays.

Heuchera ‘Fire Alarm’ found itself the center of a contentious challenge in which contestants created giant plant displays using primarily evergreen plants. Contestants Sarah Campbell and Jordan Marx took the entire supply of Heuchera ‘Fire Alarm’ available in the shared greenhouse for the challenge, and they used the plants for the red hat of a giant evergreen gnome. Competitors Andrew Whittle and Ryan Lanji took issue with this maneuver, and the ordeal ended with an argument regarding the distribution of red heuchera for the challenge.

Heuchera ‘Fire Alarm’ is bright red in spring and fall while darkening to a brown-red during the summer. It is a hybrid of H. villosa and has thick, leathery, red leaves that make a medium-sized mound. Heuchera ‘Fire Alarm’ complements almost every section of a gardens’ color palette, but it can also stand on its own without question.
