New ‘Advanced Irrigation Management’ Course Continues 2025 Greenhouse Training Online

‘Advanced Irrigation Management’ starts on Aug. 4, 2025, and is a new course in the Greenhouse Training Online series from the University of Florida IFAS Extension (UF/IFAS).  This advanced-level course is designed for commercial growers with experience or well-trained/upper university-level training. It is also a requirement for the new Root Zone Expert program.

‘Advanced Irrigation Management’ Course Topics

Course participants will learn:

  • Best Management Practices (BMPs) for applications.
  • How to audit and perform follow-up maintenance on irrigation systems.
  • How to integrate substrate, plant, and environment into timed irrigation events.
  • The differences between timed and sensor-based irrigation controllers.
  • The physical properties and effects of substrates and containers on plant-available water.
  • The types of irrigation systems, components, and design criteria.
  • Water flow, friction, and pressure dynamics in a real irrigation system.

‘Advanced Irrigation Management’ Schedule and Registration

The ‘Advanced Irrigation Management’ course runs from Aug. 4-29, 2025. Available in English and Spanish, all course material is completely online and available at any time of the day. It includes pre-recorded videos, quizzes, and an interactive discussion board with Dr. John Lea-Cox, Professor Emeritus at the University of Maryland. Two new modules are activated each week during the course, for a total of eight learning modules. Instruction is at each participant’s own pace and time within the four weeks of the course, with a typical time commitment of about six hours per week.
