There is often debate about what type of growing container is the ideal choice for nursery and cannabis growers. However, despite a large variety of growing container options available, growing success is often more about the methods and the environment than the choice of containers, according to a recent blog post from HC Companies.

The industry tends to gravitate towards 5-gallon planters, pots, and plant containers. They’re deep enough to accommodate a variety of root systems with a narrow design allowing growers to fit more containers in smaller spaces. They’re also easily mobile.

There are a few other reasons why 5-gallon planters, pots, and plant containers are popular for nursery and cannabis growers.

Depth: The deeper the container, the better aeration for overall root health and development. Root systems need enough room to spread out, preventing them from getting tangled within each other, essentially suffocating or drowning the plant.

Width: Most growers prefer to use containers that are deeper rather than wide. The narrower size means containers are less likely to topple over due to the additional soil. A narrower width also means you can cultivate more growing containers as they take up less room than wider rimmed containers.

Drainage: 5-gallon planters, pots, and plant containers are ideal for drainage. When moisture is infused within the soil, the depth of the container allows a slow, gradual flow for roots systems to soak up the water adequately without oversaturation.
