Coir Fiber, the best choice for cannabis growers

We explain why coconut fiber is a much more effective substrate to maximize your crop than rockwool.

For many producers there is a fundamental decision that must be made when starting a cannabis cultivation: coir fiber or rockwool? Deciding correctly which substrate to use is a choice that will determine the production technique, but also the productiveness of the plant.

The market is clearly evolving towards coir fiber as the preferred growing method of major cannabis producers. The reasons for this change are various. “The main benefit that growers detect is that it’s a much more economic growing medium than rockwool” explains Alejandra Pintos, Marketing Manager at Projar, the leading producer of coir fiber for soilless production worldwide. But beyond the economic decisions, which are comprehensively important, there are very advantageous aspects in harvest’s results for the most demanding cannabis growers. “Growing in coconut fiber is much simpler than in rockwool” continues Pintos, “irrigation or temperature management errors in rock wool, for example, can be fatal for the entire harvest, causing a reduction in production volume or even promote roots rot and the loss of the entire harvest”.

These risks are less frequent with coconut fiber and the management of errors can be easily qualified. “Coir fiber is a much more manageable material at the humidity level. It is also an organic raw material; therefore, it is naturally very rich in nutrients for cannabis plants to grow healthy. Unlike rockwool, which is a completely inert material” clarifies Pintos.

The cannabis industry is also experiencing an important awakening of environmental awareness due to the carbon footprint caused by indoor cannabis production.  “Rock wool cannot be recycled, so it has to be disposed of by very expensive industrial processes. At the environmental level it is very polluting! But coconut fiber is a material that is already recycled, and when it accomplishes its initial purpose, it can be managed together with other plant residues to be composted, applied directly to the soil or mixed with other substrates” explains Alejandra.

But the main key of success about growing in coir fiber when it comes to a cannabis production is mostly due to its capacity for radical plant development. In fact, good root growth is essential to healthy, strong and very productive plants. Short, weak roots will not generate enough force to drive a good crop. Especially in indoor crops, it is important to have the most specialized advice when installing a growing substrate. Coir fiber favors a rapid development of the root system as it optimizes aeration and guarantees greater water retention in its porosities. In this way the plant grows stronger and healthier.

Projar offers personalized advisory service to the growers before and during the cultivation phase to ensure that the solutions adopted meet the client’s expectations.

And it is exactly why Projar, and its Medical Trust Certification program, comes into play. “Being manufacturers allows us to develop and test new customized solutions to the needs of each grower and the type of production of it” comments Pintos. “Growers can discover more about this commitment we have with our cannabis customers by visiting our web site; there you will see all the guarantees of quality, sustainability and traceability that we offer within our work-process in all the lots that will be used in cannabis cultivation”.
