Indoor Ag Tech Veteran Tom Piini Dies at 71

Micro Grow Control Systems, Inc., a leading provider of advanced grow control systems, has announced the passing of its President and Founder, Tom Piini.
Tom was instrumental in shaping the foundation of the indoor agriculture movement, establishing Micro Grow at a time when the concept of controlled-environment growing was in its infancy. His vision, innovation, and unwavering dedication helped position the company — and the industry — at the forefront of computerized, high-efficiency growing solutions.
Tom’s contributions extended far beyond technology; he built a company culture rooted in integrity, service, and a passion for advancing agriculture. Under his leadership, MicroGrow’s environmental control systems, irrigation and fertigation solutions, and distribution of Autogrow products reached hundreds of colleges and universities — from Stanford to Cornell University — and supported growers ranging from Central Valley farmers to major city arboretums to international flower markets. He was also a long-time member of the National Greenhouse Manufacturers Association.
“Tom Piini is a legend in our industry,” says Dan Bilhorn, owner of United Greenhouse. “We worked on hundreds of projects together, and we were friends for over 40 years. Tom was brilliant about what a project needed and a gregarious, kind man. I will miss him forever.”
Continuity and Leadership
In keeping with the company’s long-standing succession plan, Micro Grow and Qcom will continue operations without interruption. Tom’s son, Chris Piini, Vice President, is at the helm, ensuring the continuity of the values and innovation his father championed. Working alongside the experienced management team — many with more than 20 years of service at MicroGrow — Chris is committed to honoring Tom’s legacy while guiding the company into its next chapter.
“My father was a true pioneer — not just for this company, but for an entire industry,” says Chris Piini, Vice President of Micro Grow. “He believed in creating solutions that made indoor agriculture accessible, efficient, and sustainable. It is an honor to continue his work and carry forward the vision he dedicated his life to.”

Further details regarding memorial arrangements will be shared in the coming days. In addition to Chris, Tom is survived by his three daughters, five grandchildren, three brothers, and two sisters.
Founded in Temecula, CA, in the early 1980s, Micro Grow designs and manufactures environmental control systems for commercial greenhouses and indoor agriculture facilities. In 2012, the company acquired Qcom, expanding its irrigation and fertigation expertise, and is also a proud distributor of Autogrow products.
