Kirigin Cellars Winery in Gilroy, CA, provided the backdrop once again for Proven Winners’ new varieties introductions for 2019. Spring Meadow Nurseries and Walters Gardens staff were on-hand to share the latest in woodies and perennials from the Proven Winners ColorChoice product line, and visitors walked through nearly 50 new annual introductions.

Achillea Firefly Series (Proven Winners Perennials/Walters Gardens)
Achillea is a new genus addition for Proven Winners. Walters Gardens has been working to breed the height back into Achillea while still selecting for stem strength. The Firefly series blooms early summer to late summer and is hardy in Zones 3 to 8.
‘Crested Surf’ is similar to a Japanese painted fern but with more height and vigor. It gets its name from its crested leaf tips. ‘Crested Surf’ grows well in moist, shaded conditions and is hardy in Zones 3 to 8.

Proven Winners is partnering with Classic Caladiums to add 10 fancy-leaved and 10 strap-leaved caladiums to its product line.

Petunia ‘Supertunia Vista Snowdrift’ (Proven Winners Annuals)
Snowdrift is the sister of ‘Supertunia Bubblegum’ petunia, only in in snow white. It’s a landscape petunia that flowers early in the season and matches the timing of other Supertunia Vista petunias. It has great heat and humidity tolerance.
Hardy in Zones 5 to 8, ‘Interstella’ is a flowering evergreen with lantern-like, ruby blooms and star-shaped, red new growth. Best of all, it’s deer resistant.

Rosa ‘Ringo’ (ColorChoice Shrubs/Spring Meadow Nursery)
Winner of six international awards and hardy in Zones 4 to 8, ‘Ringo’ has unique two-toned blooms with distinct eyes. Plants flower all season with no deadheading. The glossy foliage is disease resistant.

Salvia farinacea ‘Unplugged So Blue’ (Proven Winners Annuals)
Smaller than Play’in the Blues salvia, Unplugged salvia have true blue flower spikes and are heat and humidity tolerant. They work well for upright containers and attract pollinators.
This summer-blooming stonecrop is unique with its stable, variegated green and creamy foliage. Its bright yellow flowers attract pollinators. It is hardy in Zones 3 to 9.

Sunstar Pentas (Proven Winners Annuals)
Bred for Northern and Southern growers to produce without supplemental lighting, Sunstar Pentas tolerate heat and humidity and work well in the landscape or in containers. Colors include: Red, Rose, Pink, and Lavender.

Proven Winners also introduced a new marketing concept this year called Decked Out, which is a program targeted at small space gardeners who want a premium container for their decks, balconies, or patios. Growers can use any container they want for the program, as long as it costs a minimum of $2.00 at wholesale.
