Flower Sales Drop For Mother’s Day

This Mother’s Day, all holiday-related categories are expecting to see large decline of 14.7 percent in total sales, according to industry research firm IBISWorld. This drop includes the flower and gardening items (and clothing) categories, both of which are expected to see drops of 8.1 percent and 16.9 percent, respectively. In 2008, the flower category saw $2.09 million in spending. It’s projected to see $1.92 million this year.

IBISWorld reports those purchasing gifts for Mother’s Day are staying away from department stores and specialty retailers (jewelers, florists, electronic stores, etc.), and turning to discount outlets.

“The economy is staring at a very steep, downward trajectory,” says George Van Horn, senior analyst with IBISWorld. “With the economic picture so unclear, gift giving just isn’t in many household budgets–even if it is for mom.”
