Succulents are everywhere. From containers and living walls to picture frames, brides’ bouquets, and even fingernails, there seems to be no end to the creativity with using succulents, and that’s good news for plant sales.

Agave ‘Mr. Ripple’ (Rancho Tissue Technologies)
This agave features wavy leaf edges and forms single rosettes up to 3 to 4 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide. Toothed, green leaves have a bluish tinge and velvety texture. ‘Mr. Ripple’ is possibly a cross between A. salmiana and A. protoamericana. This aloe likes full sun, good drainage, and little summer water. It is frost hardy to 0°F and Zone 7.

Agave sp 'Nizando' (Rancho Tissue Technologies)
‘Nizando’ is a new species of agave collected in Mexico and put into tissue culture. It displays beautiful yellow and green leaves. It is hardy in full sun and will tolerate cold temps to 25°F.

Agave salmiana 'Butterfingers' (Rancho Tissue Technologies)
‘Butterfingers’ is a heat-loving variety with an upright rosette of glossy, dark-green foliage sporting sawtooth edges and creamy-yellow margins. It’s a great selection for rock gardens and in arid conditions. ‘Butterfingers’ grows best in well drained soils, and it is cold hardy to freezing.

Aloe plicatilis (Rancho Tissue Technologies)
Aloe plicatilis is a 3- to 6-foot succulent shrub with gray stems terminating in a fan-like flat, 12-inch, upcurved, blue-gray, round-tipped leaf cluster. Each cluster bears one 12- to 20-inch inflorescence and a cluster of tubular orange-red flowers from winter to spring. Plant away from the hottest afternoon sun, and water occasionally during summer. Aloe plicatilis is hardy to 23°F.

Aloe ‘Safari Rose’ (Monrovia)
This compact, repeat blooming aloe keeps the color coming with big, showy spikes of light salmon-pink-colored flower clusters. ‘Safari Rose’s’ green leaves have soft teeth and grey-red tips that form an upright, spreading clump. It is heat- and drought-tolerant. ‘Safari Rose’ is a Monrovia Exclusive that is hardy in Zones 9 to 11.

Aloe ‘Safari Sunrise’ (Southern Living Plant Collection/Sunset Western Garden Collection)
‘Safari Sunrise’ has heavy repeat blooming from late summer to mid-winter on compact plants. The blooms are bicolor orange/pink to cream blooms. ‘Safari Sunrise’ is a first-year flowering plant that is drought and heat tolerant.

Aloe ukambensis (Rancho Tissue Technologies)
Not commonly seen in cultivation, Aloe ukambensis is a stemless species from Kenya with rosettes of leaves up to a yard across. The leaves are wide and have numerous closely spaced stripes running lengthwise. This aloe turns an attractive dark-red color if given a bright, sunny position. It bears red flowers and loves full sun. It is also hardy to 38°F.

Otherwise known as the helicopter plant, Crassula falcata is a species that has been around for a long time. It’s a cool enough plant it deserves some attention. It loves full sun, as do other succulents. It is now available as a young plant from D.S. Cole Growers.

Euphorbia ferox is in the same genus as the poinsettia. This means they love full sun, and they have white sap. These South African natives are naturally branching plants and can tolerate cool temperatures.

Commonly known as ‘Baby Toes,’ Fenestraria aurantiaca is a native to Africa and will naturally bloom in North America during the fall. Each “toe” is a leaf with a translucent window, which is where photosynthesis occurs. Water it sparingly and grow in full sun.

Manfreda 'Chocolate Chips' (Rancho Tissue Technologies)
This false agave is a small, low-growing plant, up to 4 inches tall and 2 feet wide. It forms a low, spreading rosette with long green leaves featuring chocolate spots and wavy-edged margins. Manfredas typically flower once annually but do not die after they bloom. ‘Chocolate Chips’ is hardy to Zone 8.
