SunMed Growers Acquires Processing License, Plans Future Expansion

The Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission has approved the ownership transfer of an existing medical cannabis processor license to SunMed Growers, one of Maryland’s licensed medical cannabis growers. Maryland state laws and regulations govern the transfer of ownership or control of the state’s medical cannabis licenses, which in most cases must be approved by a full Commission vote.
With this approval, SunMed Growers will officially launch SunMed Labs as the company’s new brand for infused and concentrated cannabis products. SunMed Labs will be housed within processing lab space built on-site at the existing SunMed Growers facility in Cecil County. It plans to have products in the Maryland marketplace before the end of 2021.

The acquisition of this processing license comes only three months after SunMed Growers completed an $18 million expansion that tripled their state-of-the-art greenhouse facility to 250,000 square feet in January.
Van Wingerden told Greenhouse Grower the addition will be used to produce and sell premium extracted products (Vape pens, Tinctures, dabs, etc.) as well as construct a commercial kitchen and produce an edibles line of products.
“The marketplace for medical cannabis products is about a 50/50 split between smokeable flower (what we currently sell) and processed products,” Van Wingerden says. “Adding processing capacity is the next step in SunMed’s business plan to be the largest, low cost producer in our marketplace for all things cannabis.”
Van Wingerden also says SunMed is working on plans to double its greenhouse facility again.
“We plan to break ground this fall on another 200,000 square-foot addition that would double our current production of biomass,” he says.
