What to Expect at Next Week’s Greenhouse Grower Medal of Excellence Event

medal of excellenceGreenhouse Grower’s Medal of Excellence event is the horticulture industry’s chance to recognize excellence in growing, breeding, innovation, and more. The event takes place at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, July 18, during Cultivate’22, in Union Station Ballroom B of the Columbus Convention Center. All industry members are welcome to attend!

We’ve already announced the finalists for a few of the awards that will be presented at the event, including Head Grower of the Year, Technology of the Year, Industry’s Choice Award for varieties, Editor’s Choice award for new varieties, and Operation of the Year. Here is more information on what to expect at the event.

  • The Industry Achievement Award will be presented to Dr. Charlie Hall, whose service to the greenhouse industry is unprecedented. The insights and expertise he has shared throughout his career have benefited many in the industry, and he is renowned in many horticultural circles for his insights and expertise.
  • The Innovator Award will be presented to Metrolina Greenhouses, which celebrates its 50th year in business this year. Founded in 1972 on 1 acre in Huntersville, NC, by Tom and Vickie VanWingerden, who came to the U.S. from the Netherlands in 1971 with $500 and a dream, Metrolina Greenhouses has grown exponentially over the past 50 years to become one of the largest and most innovative greenhouse operations in the world.
  • The Reader’s Choice: Breeders have entered their best new varieties for all to decide which one is worthy of the Readers’ Choice award. This year, there are eight entries in the finalist round. Voting is closed, but you can learn about each of the finalists here.
