2018 Northeast Floriculture Field Trials Results: Cornell University

Cornell University trialed approximately 150 cultivars of flowers and plants this year at its off-campus field site, located at Bluegrass Lane in Ithaca, NY. The trials got off to a good start with lovely weather and average temperatures. Although precipitation was overall less than average for June, July, and August, the gardens seemed to receive all of it at once, with approximately 4 inches in a one-week period at the end of July and nearly 2 inches in a single day in early August. Predictably, some genera were severely affected (Osteospermum, some Calibrachoa, some Verbena), while others thrived (Solenostmeon, Begonia, Salvia).

This year Cornell University announced that it will be moving its trial site to the renowned Cornell Botanic Gardens. The trials will be located at the heart of the gardens, near the Nevin Welcome Center.

“We are thrilled to be collaborating with the Cornell Botanic Gardens on this endeavor; the partnership will increase exposure for participating breeders while also providing educational value for students and the public,” says Cornell University’s Trial Manager Kendra Hutchins. “We enthusiastically welcome all visitors to stop in and see the trials in 2019.”
