How Cannabis Growers Feel About Potential Federal Legalization

Cannabis appeared to be among the big winners in this month’s election, and a top leader from the U.S. House of Representatives has already announced that the body will hold a floor vote on a bill to end federal cannabis prohibition next month.

But what do growers within the industry think about their future prospects as independent cannabis producers if full adult-use legislation is passed in the near future? We asked this question in Greenhouse Grower’s 2020 State of the Industry survey earlier this year. Here are some of the comments we received (respondents quoted anonymously):

  • “We believe it’s very important that state programs need to be recognized. Banking and working within the borders of the state programs is crucial.”
  • “Tentative; big business and government are adversaries to small businesses.”
  • “The independent growers will eventually find themselves needing to align with larger corporations to remain profitable in this increasingly crowed space.”
  • “I want to make sure the current growers have first rights to feed and support the adult use market before new licenses are granted.”
  • “Positive.”
  • “Positive but hesitant due to the influx of many additional growers.”
  • “I worry about the price of the commodity as it becomes more and more legal.”
  • “Not very good.”
