Terra Nova Nurseries Heads to China for Horticultural Expo

Coreopsis-Firefly-Terra-Nova-NurseriesTerra Nova Nurseries is set to be the only American company exhibiting at the 2019 International Horticultural Exhibition, which will be held in the Yanqing District Beijing, China, from April 29, 2019, to October 7, 2019. During the event, Terra Nova will showcase 60 varieties and a total of 50,000 plants in the Expo Garden Town, Perennial Garden, and various other sections of the Beijing Expo Park. Terra Nova will have its own “Terra Nova Garden” within the Expo Garden Town.

Terra Nova Nurseries will be working with partner company and licensee Beijing Florascape Ltd., to ensure all logistical planting and garden design procedures are executed properly. The two companies have a longstanding relationship, and both plan for the union with the expo event to further grow their shares of business in the Chinese market. In the half-decade Terra Nova has been partnering with Beijing Florascape, the two companies have introduced more than 100 perennial varieties to the Chinese market.

“Terra Nova will be focusing primarily on the garden design and layout, whereas Beijing Florascape will be responsible for growing the plants and seeing the installation to completion,” says Kevin Chen, Terra Nova Nurseries’ Asia representative. “In the two years leading up to the exhibition, Beijing Florascape has been trialing various Terra Nova plants and found a number of varieties that performed well in the specific climate of the region.”

The Terra Nova team has been keeping an open dialogue with Beijing Floraculture about the performances of the plants, since the Yanqing District has a colder climate than its surrounding areas. The Expo Park is located approximately 40 miles from Beijing’s city center.

Select cold-tolerant and early blooming Terra Nova Nurseries varieties that will be showcased at the gardens include Tradescantia ‘Lucky Charm’; Tradescantia ‘Sunshine Charm’; Leucanthemum ‘Bridal Bouquet’; Penstemon ‘Grape Taffy’; Kniphofia ‘Mango Popsicle’; and other varieties. All varieties will be planted in March 2019 when the planting soil and terrain is unfrozen.

The 2019 International Horticultural Exhibition’s five-plus-month garden showcase will allow visitors to stroll the various themed gardens, some of which include the Chongqing Garden, the Garden of Peach Blossom Land, Time Garden, Silk Road Garden, and more.

A major flower and plant change-out will take place when the primary exhibition concludes in early October 2019. Terra Nova, along with the help of Beijing Florascape, will replace and refresh all the exhibiting varieties in July and August. The plants will remain in the park, and the area will be sectioned off into several smaller areas. The property, under the ownership of the Chinese and Beijing governments, will be used indefinitely for public parks and an ornamental growing facility in greenhouses and on parcels of land.
