The Golden Age of Perennials is Upon Us and It is Thanks to Millennials

Millennials are starting their own gardens in this time of self-quarantine, and one of the favorites of these young growers is perennials.

Even before the pandemic, millennials were starting their own gardens and treating their plants as pets. And now, with the extra time at home, this has only increased. Millennials spend upwards of $200 for house plants, according to Business Insider.

The Golden Age of Perennials

With this uptick in new growers, perennials are their choice of plant, says Chuck Pavlich, Director of New Product Development at Terra Nova Nurseries.

I feel we are heading into the second golden age of perennials in the next few years,” Pavlich says. When I started out in the industry in the 1970s, I don’t think we sold more than a dozen different perennials in the spring. The oncoming millennials and their willingness to experiment will drive a large part of the market, and they may change the face of the market. We’d better pay attention.

Why Perennials

Many perennials are low maintenance, requiring no cutting back or fancy growing techniques. Millennials, like all new growers, prefer a nohassle plant when growing their first garden.

On top of that, perennials don’t need to be replanted, meaning millennials can take comfort in knowing their plants will come back the next year.
