Learning Opportunity: A Data-Driven Decision-Making Tool
The next THRIve webinar from AmericanHort’s Horticultural Research Institute takes place on June 4 and will focus on data-drive decision-making tools – in particular, the HortCalculator.
This presentation will introduce designed to help ornamental growers translate farm-level data into actionable financial insights. The tool generates clear analyses of profitability, breakeven points, and return on investment, giving growers confidence to evaluate sustainable production practices and new technologies.
By linking financial literacy with production decisions, the HortCalculator helps growers balance profitability and sustainability, strengthening resilience in ornamental horticulture systems. The session will highlight practical applications for nursery, greenhouse, and specialty crop operations, while also exploring opportunities for research, education, and industry partnerships to scale the tool across crops and regions.
The speaker is Ariana P. Torres, Professor of Horticulture Economics at Purdue University. Torres directs the Horticulture Business program, which reaches more than 80,000 growers annually across 47 states. She has secured $22.5 million in research funding, published 40 peer-reviewed articles, and created the Purdue HortCalculator to help specialty crop growers make data-driven investment decisions.
